portal by Jean Heng

instead of saying what i wish i could say,
such as,
stay,
there is not much i have to offer,
but won’t you allow me to share
my sorrow and joy with you?
instead of saying,
this is how terrible I can be,
please find me out and choose to
stay,
instead, i say :
look,
i have built this beautiful home,
i have decorated these walls and
there is art contained within polished frames.
i have stacked these books along the shelves to show you
i am interested in other worlds beyond my own.
i have added value, and flowers,
and chairs so we can each sit and face each other.
i have chosen to place the mirrors
where the light falls so that we don’t have to
reflect ourselves,
all these questions asked by design.
i have built this home without doors
so that you can come and go as you want.
